SAN DIEGO—LaDainian Tomlinson gave 300 wildfire victims a small head start in furnishing their destroyed homes—offering free high-definition TVs.The reigning NFL MVP made a video appearance on the “Dr. Phil” show and announced he was donating TVs to members of the studio audience, made up of those who lost homes and possessions in the October fires.

Tomlinson made the announcement through his Touching Lives Foundation and Vizio, which is providing the TVs.

“My family was evacuated during the fires, and while we were fortunate that we didn’t lose our home, I certainly understand how devastating this situation has been for so many innocent families who weren’t so fortunate,” Tomlinson said.

As the Tomlinsons left their home, they saw firefighters and other personnel going door-to-door, making sure everyone got out. On Tuesday, Tomlinson and his wife, LaTorsha, held a lunch for about 700 first responders.

“You think, ‘Here are the real heroes,’” Tomlinson said. “All we do is entertain and try to set an example. But the firefighters and sheriff’s, the doctors, the nurses, the teachers—you guys are the real heroes.”
